Why these wonders? And why seven?
The list is an aggregate of guide books for Greek tourists from 280 BC to 146 AD. These travelers believed seven was a lucky number. The Ishtar Gate was considered part of this list, eventually replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria. I will cover both, and more, soon. With the gate off, only two of the works are non-Greek, making the list essentially a celebration of ancient Greece. Many of the wonders are said to be inspiration for modern American monuments: the sparse Temple of Zeus inspired the Lincoln Memorial; the Colossus inspired the Statue of Liberty.
